Something big happened on June 17, 2025 — not a new car launch, not a sales record, but something far more meaningful for India’s future in the automotive world. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone for INDEA, the Indian School for Design of Automobiles, at XLRI Delhi-NCR in Jhajjar, Haryana.
Now, you might ask — what’s so special about that?
Well, INDEA is India’s first-ever school completely focused on car design. Until now, students who dreamt of becoming car designers had to either settle for unrelated design degrees or go abroad. But with INDEA, India is finally building a home for those dreams.
A New Beginning
This school isn’t just about learning how to sketch a car or model it on a computer. It’s about building the minds that will shape the future of Indian and global mobility.
The idea came from Avik Chattopadhyay, a veteran in the design world. With support from XLRI’s new Centre for Automobile Design & Management (XADM), INDEA is being developed to blend design, technology, business, and real-world needs — all into one place.
The goal is simple: train smart, creative, and practical car designers right here in India. People who understand our roads, our people, and our climate, and still build cars that meet global standards.
Gadkari’s Message: “Turn Knowledge into Innovation”
Minister Gadkari didn’t attend in person, but his words left a mark. He spoke about the huge role that the auto industry plays in India — in jobs, in growth, and in shaping how we move.
He said the future isn’t just about cheap cars. It’s about smart design, top safety, green technology, and cars that speak the language of the world. And for that, we need designers who can think big, think differently.
“The young talent trained at INDEA will be game-changers,” he said. “They’ll take ideas and turn them into powerful innovations that help India grow.”
‘Param’ – A Sculpture with a Story
At the foundation event, one thing stood tall — quite literally — a sculpture called ‘Param’, which means supreme in Sanskrit.
It’s not just a decoration. It was designed by Indian artist Vibhor Sogani and it represents what INDEA stands for — endless growth, imagination, and freedom to think beyond limits. It’s a symbol of belief in the power of Indian minds to change the world.
More Than a School, A Movement
INDEA isn’t here to be “just another college.” As Avik said, this is a national movement. A call to push India into the future of automobile design — not as followers, but as leaders.
From safety innovations to stylish EVs, from affordable small cars to luxury designs — the people trained here will work across the full spectrum of what the Indian auto sector is becoming.
What’s Next?
In the coming years, INDEA will start welcoming students who won’t just learn — they’ll create. They’ll work with car companies, design firms, and government projects. They’ll solve real problems. And most importantly, they’ll do it here, in India.
This is just the start. But it’s the kind of start that builds history.
India has been known for building cars. Now, it’s time we become known for designing them too.
